have y'all read any of these and liked or disliked them?
and i don't have many poetry books on my list--suggestions are welcome!
Sounds like a great list - I would warn you against the Debi Pearl book, though! I'm not sure about "Created to Be His Helpmeet," but Debi and Michael Pearl have another book called "To Train Up a Child" that advocates child abuse (they describe how you can use a curtain rod to spank your child without leaving bruises). I've heard that in "Created to Be His Helpmeet," Debi Pearl also says that if your husband has an affair, it's always your fault, and gives tips on how to seduce him back. Her only suggestion is to make yourself more alluring than the mistress. I've only read "To Train Up a Child" but I would never read any of the Pearls' books again. I'm a complementarian, not even slightly a feminist, and I think her books are crazy.
ReplyDeleteI really want to start reading more Elisabeth Elliot, though! I think the addition of "The Shaping of a Christian Family" is a good one. :)
ReplyDeleteHere are some of the one-star Amazon reviews of the Debi Pearl book. They kind of explain more of my issues with the Pearls' "ministry": http://www.amazon.com/Created-Be-His-Help-Meet/product-reviews/1892112604/ref=cm_cr_dp_qt_hist_one?ie=UTF8&filterBy=addOneStar&showViewpoints=0
ReplyDeletewhoa! i'm glad you told me about that--i'm removing it from my list ASAP--i was recommended it as a good book about marriage. yikes!
